Pope Francis celebrates Christmas Eve Mass after year of peace pleas

Vatican City, Dec 25: Pope Francis has celebrated Christmas Eve Mass in a packed St Peter's Basilica, rounding out a year marked by his pleas for the world to better protect innocents caught up in wars, migrations and abject poverty.

As the Sistine Chapel choir sang "Gloria" and the basilica's bells rang out across Rome, Francis yesterday processed to the altar behind cardinals draped in golden vestments for the service celebrating the birth of Jesus.

The late night Mass was the first major event of the Christmas season, followed by Francis' noon Urbi et Orbi (To the city and the world) blessing on Christmas Day.

Francis has spent much of 2016 bemoaning the Islamic extremist violence that has driven Christians from Mideast communities that date to the time of Christ. He has demanded Europe in particular do more to welcome refugees, saying Jesus himself was a migrant who deserved more than being born in a manger. And he has denounced the wasteful ways of the wealthy when children and the poor die of hunger every day.

Udupi: All 18 test negative for COVID-19 after Thekkate petrol bunk incident

Udupi, May 2: All the 18 people who were advised self-quarantine in connection with the Thekkatte petrol bunk incident have been tested negative, however, they were asked to continue the 14-day quarantine, said DHO Sudhirchandra Suda on Saturday.

the petrol bunk at Thekkatte was sealed after a Covid infected person had food and took bath at the petrol bunk, while he was travelling from Mumbai to Mandya.

The employees and the owner of the petrol bunk along with the six employees at Sasthana toll gate were asked to quarantine themselves for 14 days.

Mangaluru woman, waiting for repatriation, passes away in Saudi Arabia

Dammam, May 29: A woman hailing from Mangaluru, who was waiting for repatriation amidst coronavirus lockdown in Saudi Arabia, passed away yesterday after a brief illness.

The deceased has been identified as Lateefa (55), wife of Abdul Azeez, a resident of Angaragundi near Baikampady on the outskirts of the city.

She had flown to Saudi Arabia in November 2019 along with her husband to spend some time with their NRI son in Dammam. They were supposed to return in April this year.

After the sudden cancellation of regular flights due to lockdown, they were waiting for the repatriation flights from Dammam to Mangaluru or Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Lateefa’s health condition worsened and she was hospitalised. She passed away on Thursday without responding to any treatment. Last rites are expected to take place in Dammam.

Women’s satyagrah, human chain mark Martyrs’ Day in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jan 30: A day-long ‘satyagrah’ by women followed by formation of human chain marked the Martyrs’ Day, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in Mangaluru.

The organisers were ‘We, the People of India’, whose sole intention was to safeguard constitution of India and raise voice against those to attack the constitution.

Amidst nationwide agitation by ‘We, the People of India’ against contentious CAA, NRC, the women of Manglauru have decided to hold satyagrah and form a human chain in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in the heart of the city on January 30.

The Satyagrah commenced at 10 a.m. At 4:30 p.m. a human chain will be formed. At 5.17p.m. when the father of the nation was gunned down 72 years ago during his evening prayer at Birla House by Godse, the demonstrators raised the slogan of unity to defeat the ideology of Godse.
