Priest booked under SC/ST Act for assaulting student, insulting his caste

Mangaluru, Nov 14: Police have booked Fr Vishal Monis, the principal of St Anne English Medium High School, Kelrai in Neermarga village here, under the Scheduled Caste and Tribe (prevention of atrocities) Act for allegedly assaulting a Hindu student and insulting his caste.

1princiHowever, Fr Monis, who is also an assistant parish priest, has denied the allegations and said that miscreants have used the student in question to target him. Even though the incident occurred on November 5, the student's mother Prema M lodged the complaint at Mangaluru Rural Police Station only on Friday.

In her complaint, Prema, has claimed that her son was hit with a cable wire for having failed to do his homework. She also accused the principal of deliberately insulting their caste. She also stated that the boy was asked to join a Kannada medium school, if he could not cope with English.

Fr Monis said that some miscreants who are not happy with him created thisdrama'. “I have been looking into a land dispute involving the church. Some people are not happy about this. They have used the student as a bait, and registered a fake complaint," he claimed.

He said that the student had been studying at a Kannada medium school earlier. "We admitted into the English medium school, free of cost, since he had a good academic record. However, he couldn't cope with the change in the medium of instruction. He also came late to class often," he said.

Fr Vishal pointed out that the school authorities had also counselled the boy on many occasions, when he had been absent for more than 15 days. "He was also not attending to his school work. When I spoke to him in this regard, he told me that he wanted to return to Kannada medium. So, I asked to seek admission at a Kannada medium school, which was close," he added.

Bengaluru, May 26: Unknown miscreants have set ablaze 30-40 migrant labourers hutments in Bengaluru east, prompting police to take suo motu cognizance, an official said on Tuesday.

"As many as 30-40 migrant labourers' hutments have been set ablaze by unknown miscreants at Kacharakanahallin in KG Halli, we have taken suo motu cognizance of the crime," said a police official to media.

Police are investigating the arson invoking IPC Sections 143, 147, 188, 436, 123, 504, 506 and others.

"There was no loss of life in the arson as the migrant labourers were away at their hometowns because of COVID lockdown," said the official.

The labourers came from different parts of Karnataka to eke out a living and were living in those huts near the Rama Temple in KG Halli.

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has appealed to employers not to cut salaries of their maids, servants and drivers who are unable to attend work due to the current lockdown situation in the country.

He said compassionate gesture of employers will support the poor and needy.

"I request all the employers not to cut salaries of their maids, servants, drivers etc., who are not able to work due to social distancing. Bengaluru, Apr 6: The Covid-19 Task Force aims to conduct 80,000 throat swab and blood tests over the next three weeks here.

According to Task Force Nodal Officer C N Manjunath an order for one lakh anti-body test kits has been placed, and was expected to arrive on April 12.

"From January 20 to March 23, more than 1.2 lakh people arrived at international airports from abroad. Of these, we have kept 37,358 under observation. The Health officials and personnel in fever clinics and hospitals are being trained to conduct the tests. There is no necessity to obtain a clearance to test people with suspected infection. Only laboratories need to get permission to test their blood and throat swab samples."
