Ravi Belagere-Anil Raj case: HC orders notice to assembly, speaker, state govt

Bengaluru, Nov 30: The Karnataka high court on Thursday ordered notice to legislative assembly, its speaker, state government and three complainants in response to the petition filed by journalists Ravi Belagere and Anil Raj.

'Hi Bangalore' editor Ravi Belagere and 'Yelahanka Voice' editor Anil Raj had moved the court challenging their conviction and punishment of imprisonment for a year ordered by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. They were held guilty of breach of privilege over alleged defamatory articles about the legislators.

Justice A S Boppanna said that this matters needs detailed consideration. He said that the all parties should be magnanimous in this matter until this case is before the court.

Adjourning the hearing on Wednesday, Justice A S Bopanna observed that everybody's privilege be protected. This was when counsel for petitioners prayed the court for granting interim order saying that the duo may be arrested as the assembly has reaffirmed the decision imposing one year rigorous imprisonment and Rs 10,000 sentence imposed on them.

Mangaluru, May 13: Dakshina Kannada today recorded its fourth death due to novel coronavirus.

The victim, identified by number P-536, is a 58-year-old woman from Boloor area of Manglauru. She was tested covid-19 positive on April 30. 

A patient with TB meningitis, the woman had been treated and discharged from Mangaluru’s First Neuro Hospital, which has emerged as covid-19 hub of coastal Karnataka.

In hospital she had reportedly come in contact with patient No 501 who worked as a sweeper in the same hospital. 

With this death, the number of active covid-19 cases reduced to 16 in Dakshina Kannada. The district has so far reported 34 covid-19 cases including four deaths. 14 have been discharged.

Ballari, Jul 17: An MLA from Karnataka’s Ballari district has tested positive for covid-19. P T Parameshwar Naik, Congress MLA from Huvina Hadagali constituency confirmed that he contracted coronavirus.

Parameshwar Naik had developed symptoms a few days back. He was subjected to Covid-19 test at a hospital in Harapanahalli. On Thursday, his report came positive. Naik’s house at Harapanahalli has been sealed. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bengaluru.

The other legislators from the state to test positive for coronavirus are: MLAs C T Ravi (Chikkmagaluru), Bharat Shetty (Mangaluru North), Ranganath (Kunigal), Sharath Bachegowda (Hoskote), Rajkumar Patil Telkur (Sedam), Ajay Singh (Jewargi), Prasad Abbayya (Hubballi-Dharwad East), MLCs Bhojegowda and M K Pranesh.

Bengaluru, Apr 1: After fake sanitisers and masks, Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have busted another racket and seized fake thermometers worth Rs 8 lakh, it said in a statement on Wednesday.

Based on credible information, police conducted the raid on Prajval Surgical and Scientific store located on the first floor of a commercial building in the first block, Rajajinagar. They arrested store manager Keshavan N, 32, a resident of Kurubarahalli.

The police have seized 70 fake infrared forehead thermometers and 60 batteries used in these thermometers. They were worth around Rs 8 lakh as per the price they charged customers for each thermometer.
