Siddaramaiah responsible for closure of bars on NHs in city: Kumaraswamy

Bengaluru, Jul 6: JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Wednesday held Chief Minster Siddaramaiah responsible for the closure of bars along national highways within Bengaluru city.hdk

The Supreme Court order on the closure of bars came in December last year. The chief minister, who also holds the Excise portfolio, was, however, in a deep slumber for six months. He held the first meeting with the owners of liquor shops and officials only on Tuesday. Revenue loss to the state exchequer due to the closure of bars is estimated at Rs 5,000 crore per annum, if the bars remain closed permanently, he told reporters. The JD(S) leader was speaking after meeting the party workers at JP Bhavan here.

The government has already announced farm loan waiver. “How will it mobilise resources to implement the loan waiver if the bars are closed permanently? Is this the way to run the government? He (chief minister) is only issuing irresponsible statements against Opposition parties,” the former chief minister said.

Kumaraswamy also accused the ruling party of mobilising funds for the next Assembly elections. “We have come to know that the government is meddling with the preparation of 2031 master plan of Bengaluru.

Permission is being given recklessly for change of land use around Bengaluru. The chief minister is letting down the interest of the state, he charged.

Probe sought

Kumaraswamy demanded that the state government should order a probe into irregularities in the Energy department, especially in bidding for solar power generating units and power purchase. Though a legislature committee has been set up to look into irregularities in the department in the past 10 years, it is unlikely to bring out the truth, he added.

The total debt accumulated by the five electricity supply companies because of purchase of power is Rs 16,000 crore, he said.

‘CM under illusion’

Kumaraswamy said performance of the JD(S) in the byelections to various wards of urban local bodies has proved that the party is a force to reckon with in the state. The ruling party has lost badly. “The Congress candidate in a Mysuru City Corporation ward has lost his deposit in the bypoll. Still, chief minister thinks that the Congress will come back to power in the next Assembly elections. This clearly shows that the chief minister is under illusion,” he added.

Dubai, Jul 9: Air India Express has opened ticket bookings for flights from India to the UAE from July 12 to 26. The carrier posted the announcement on its social media pages.

“INDIA to UAE - Flights are open for sale! Bookings could be made through our website (http://airindiaexpress.in), call centre or authorised travel agents. Visit http://blog.airindiaexpress.in for more details,” the budget airline tweeted.

A clause mentioned in the flyer attached to the post added that only UAE residents with permits to return from India can book flights.

Thousands of Indian expats have been waiting to book flights back to the UAE after being stuck home for about four months due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions.

Vande Bharat Mission flights

Under the fourth phase of Vande Bharat Mission, as many as 104 flights will be operating between UAE and India. 

The Air India announced this on Twitter under a post “#FlyAI : Important Information for ICA approved UAE residents who wish to travel to UAE on Vande Bharat Mission flights.”

A flyer attached to the post addressed passengers who wish to travel to UAE on flights being operated under Vande Bharat Mission by Air India and Air India Express in pursuance of agreement between Civil Aviation authorities of India and the UAE.

“AI and AIE operating evacuation flights to Indian citizens from the UAE to India will carry ICA approved UAE residents (returning to the UAE from India) on the outward journey from India to the UAE.”

“On the India-UAE journey, all these flights will carry only those passengers who are destined for the UAE.”

“This arrangement will be operational for a period of 15 days from July 12 to 26,” the airline added.

While most of the Vande Bharat flights are operated by AIE, a few flights from Sharjah are operated by Air India.

New Delhi, Jan 19: Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Sunday asserted that every state assembly has the constitutional right to pass a resolution and seek the amended Citizenship Act's withdrawal, but if the law is declared constitutional by the Supreme Court then it will be problematic to oppose it.

His remarks came a day after he had said there is no way a state can deny the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) when it is already passed by the Parliament.

"I believe the CAA is unconstitutional. Every State Assembly has the constitutional right to pass a resolution and seek its withdrawal. When and if the law is declared to be constitutional by the Supreme Court then it will be problematic to oppose it. The fight must go on!" Sibal said in a tweet.

His remarks on the CAA at the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF) on Saturday had caused a flutter as several non-BJP governments, including Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra, have voiced their disagreement with the CAA as well as National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

"If the CAA is passed no state can say 'I will not implement it'. It is not possible and is unconstitutional. You can oppose it, you can pass a resolution in the Assembly and ask the central government to withdraw it.

"But constitutionally saying that I won't implement, it is going to be problematic and going to create more difficulties," said the former minister of law and justice.

Bengaluru, Jul 2: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru Director CS Patil said that good rainfall is expected in few districts during next five days.

The districts likely to receive rainfall include Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu. All these districts had received deficit rainfall till date from June 1.

"From June 1 to till date Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Kodagu districts received deficit rainfall. However, there is an expectation of good rainfall in these districts in next 5 days," said CS Patil.

"Coastal districts are very likely to experience light to moderate to widespread rainfall activity during the next five days," he added.
