Bengaluru, Nov 10:  Hundreds of BJP workers, along with three BJP legislators were detained in Kodagu district when they protested against Karnataka government sponsored Tipu Jayanti Celebrations which was held amid tight police security on Saturday.

Protests by BJP workers and members of other right-wing organisations marked the Tipu Jayanti celebrations in Kodagu, which had witnessed violent incidents in 2015 leading to killing of two persons.

Police mounted tight security across the state with several districts coming under prohibitory orders under Sec 144 of CrPC.

In the state capital the government organised the celebrations at Banquet Hall in Vidhana Soudha despite protests by the BJP and other right wing organisations. Police screened every person entering the State Secretariat with official invitation and there were some curbs on even media persons.

However chief minister H D Kumaraswamy was conspirious in his absence at Vidhana Soudha as he was away from town on a three day rest as per the advise of doctors. He is staying with his family in a place near Mysuru. The grand function was held under the leadership of deputy chief minister G Parameshwara.

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah, the Chairman of the coordination committee of the JD(S)-Congress coalition government was honoured by minister Jamir Ahmed Khan and other Muslim leaders who presented him with a silver sword for his unstinted support for celebration of Tipu Jayanti.

The celebrations was organised by the government in most of the districts with heavy bandobust provided by the police. No untoward incidents were reported from any of these districts.

However, BJP opposes the celebration saying that the 19th century warrior king was a ‘bigot’ and had involved in murdering large number of Hindus in Karnataka and Kerala and also tried to force them for religious conversion.

In Kodagu, Virajpet former Legislative Assembly speaker and BJP MLA K G Bopaiah was arrested when he tried to take out a protest march of BJP workers despite the ban orders. Similarly MLC Sunil Subramanya along with large number of BJP workers was detained in Madikeri when they tried to stage a black flag demonstration and raised slogans against the government. Another Assembly member Apachu Ranjan representing Madikeri was also detained in the hilly town.

Mr Subramanya and Mr Ranjan were locked in a heated argument even as the party workers shouted slogans against the celebration wearing black robs and waving flags. The agitators aired slogans against the Congress-JD(S) coalition government.

The protest began when the police prevented people from entering the celebration venue for those who do not have invitation cards. BJP workers along with Mr Bopaiah were also arrested in Virajpet where they staged protest wearing block strips .

However, no protests by BJP workers in Mysuru as well as Srirangapatna, in Mandya district, official sources said.

The Mysuru city police have clamped prohibitory orders for two days from yesterday as precautionary measure and to maintain law and order.

In Srirangapatna, a large police presence is in place to ensure law and order.

Bengaluru, Jun 30: In an attempt to tackle unemployment amidst covid-19 crisis, the Karnataka state government has launched a job portal connecting employers and job seekers.

The portal, 'Skill connect' ( https://skillconnect.kaushalkar.com/ ) provides region-wise and sector-wise job listings. An interested candidate can register on the portal and either apply for jobs or can also seek skill training.

As on Monday, the portal has 25 registered companies with over 2000 jobs available in various sectors.

The portal works more or less on similar lines as that of any private job portal, except that those posting jobs and candidates searching for employment will have to register with the Skill Development Department.

Launching the portal on Monday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa hoped that the portal would provide an impetus to job creation, as well as the economic revival of the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan who is also the skill development Minister added, "All these years, there was no information and communication between job seekers and recruiters. This portal will solve that problem."

Also, until now, there hasn't been comprehensive information either on those seeking jobs or those looking for employees. The skill development efforts have not been in sync with the market. All these issues would be addressed by the portal, he said.

According to Karnataka Skill Development Authority Managing Director Ashwin Gowda, the portal has already seen a response with about 68 applicants in just a day.

Officials said even the organisations will have to register with the government while providing all documents concerned. The government aims to avoid any fake job advertisements through this. "We will also enable virtual interviews between the candidate and the employer," sources in the department told DH.

Recently, the government had also launched a portal exclusively for migrants who had returned to Karnataka from other places. This was meant to work as a skill registry.

However, the portal that was launched on Monday, went a step ahead by connecting both the prospective employers and employees, according to officials in the department.

Lucknow, Apr 13: Muslims in Uttar Pradesh are now worried that the intense communal profiling of the Corona patients by the official agencies could lead to lynching incidents once the lockdown is lifted.

Muslim scholar and former SP spokesman, Abdul Hafiz Gandhi, on Monday said, "The manner in which the government agencies are identifying persons belonging to Tablighi Jamaat in the list of Covid-19 patients is now translating into intense communal profiling which has been prohibited by the World Health Organization and the central government. A very small percentage of Muslims subscribe to the Tablighi Jamaat ideology but the impression going around is that the Muslim community, in general, is spreading coronavirus."

He said that there was a strong possibility of Muslims, in general, being attacked after the lockdown is lifted.

"This is exactly what happened on the cow slaughter issue. Even a small rumour led to people being lynched by mobs across the country. Corona is a pandemic and should be treated like one. We should fight against the virus together instead of creating a communal divide. Every day, the government spokesman lays down the number of Corona positive cases and then goes on to say how many of them are from Tablighi Jamaat," he explained.

Amir Haider, a social activist and also a veteran Congress leader, echoed similar sentiments when he said, "We strongly condemn the Tablighi Jamaat for ignoring the protocols and holding the congregation but why is the state government repeatedly harping on the religious angle. Shia and Sunni clerics are repeatedly asking the people to adhere to government guidelines and follow safety protocols.

He said that efforts to create a communal divide on the corona issue could have dangerous ramification after the lockdown is lifted."

A retired IAS officer, who did not wish to be named, said, that people have already started objecting to taking home deliveries from Muslim employees.

"My neighbours refused to take delivery of groceries from a Muslim boy. This is just the beginning of the narrative that is being drilled into the minds. We must check this before it explodes into something very dangerous," he said.
