Mangaluru, Jan 25: Minister for Textiles, Ports and Inland Transport Baburao Chinchanasur said that all the tranches of ADB-funded project to prevent sea erosion would be completed in Ullal region of Dakshina Kannada by June 2016.

Addressing mediapersons at a press conference here on Saturday, he said that the first tranche of the project that includes construction of four inshore berms and two offshore reefs along with breakwaters, out of which the construction of the first inshore berm and breakwater was already underway. Two inshore berms, one offshore reef and breakwater are expected to be completed before the onset of monsoons this year, he assured.

According to the information provided by the minister, the construction work of four inshore berms at an estimated cost of Rs 25.21 crore had been handed over to RDS Projects Limited, Cochin and an expenditure of Rs 16.12 had been incurred so far. The construction work of two offshore reefs at an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore had been handed to Dharthi Dredging and Infrastructure Limited, Hyderbad and the cost incurred so far was Rs 28.52 crore. The reconstruction of breakwaters had been handed over to R B Chavan- Arjun Earth Movers, Mumbai through the tender process at an estimated cost of Rs 40.91 crore.

He said that the loan negotiations with ADB for the second tranche of the project would be done in October 2015.

In the second tranche, a total of 11 places had been identified along the coastline of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts with the purpose of implementing a stable shore and preserving it, including Someshwara, Yermal Thenka, Udyavara, Kodi Bengre, Kodi Kanyana, Gangolli, Maruvanthe, Madikal, Shiroor, Murudeshwar and Pavinakurve, he said.

Mr Chinchansoor said that the state government intended to develop and modernise 12 minor ports along the coastline by offering the land to private companies on a lease basis under the Karnataka State Port Development Policy (KSPD) 2014, which would be a profitable venture for the state government.

On setting up of a Maritime Board for Mangaluru, he said that the proposal was still pending for approval before the President.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 31: The Kerala government

on Tuesday rejected concerns of community spread of novel coronavirus in the state in the wake of the second death of a patient here who had no travel history or reported contact with any infected person.

Setting aside the concern, Health Minister K K Shylaja said the deceased man, a native of nearby Pothancode, was already suffering from several other health issues including high blood pressure.

The 68-yearold man died at the government medical college here, taking the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Kerala to two, the government said.

"We have got information that the deceased man had come in contact with some persons arrived from the Gulf. As he was very sick and was not in a position to speak, we could not collect details from him directly," she told reporters here.

"So we had to collect such details from his relatives now. As per preliminary assessment, it was a case of contact spread. So, as of now, there is no need to get panic about the community spread," she said

The possibility of death was high among patients, aged above 60 years and suffering from other diseases like heart ailments or diabetics, she said.

"That's why we are giving strict directions to the elderly people to remain in homes and avoid contact with infected persons, " the minister said.

However, the minister directed those came in contact with the deceased person to remain in self-quarantine and inform the authorities if they developed any infection symptoms.

In both the coronavirus deaths in the state, the deceased persons were aged and were suffering from other diseases, she added.

Bengaluru, Mar 2: Karnataka Minister BC Patil on Monday repeated his earlier statements that he will approach the Centre to bring a law to "shoot at sight" anyone who raises anti-India slogans.

"I am not going back on my statement as I have not said anything wrong. I had said that I will ask the central government to bring a law to shoot at sight those who shout slogans against India. Nowadays it has become a fashion for some youths to get popularity this way which spoils the country and patriotism," Patil told reporters here.

"There is nothing wrong in asking for a law. I have not said that I will myself shoot someone who shouts slogans against India. If the same thing happens in Pakistan, they will be beheaded. But we are not so brutal, we book a case and send them to judicial custody," he added.

Patil also said that there was no need for holding discussions over the amended Citizenship Act, but added that the ruling BJP will defend it if the opposition raises a stir in the state Assembly.

The budget session of the Karnataka Assembly began on Monday.

Bengaluru, Jul 8: In yet another revenue generation measure, the Revenue department has issued an order permitting the sale of government land leased to various religious, industrial and other organisations.

Officials say that around Rs 2,250 crore will be generated in Bengaluru Urban district alone, if the order is implemented.

While rules for the process are yet to be formed, it has directed deputy commissioners of various districts to submit proposals for the sale of such lands leased by the government to various institutions under the Karnataka Land Grant Rules, 1969. The order came after a recent Cabinet decision. 

The order issued on July 6 says that government lands leased to private organisations, trusts, industries, educational, social welfare, religious and agricultural purposes can be regularised by paying the guidance value of the land, provided the organisation continued to use the land for the same purpose it was granted for.

If an organisation or trust wanted to convert the land for other purposes, it will be charged twice the guidance value. According to the order, land leased to organisations that are unwilling to purchase the land will be surveyed. “DCs should initiate measures to survey such lands and recover the unused land to the government,” it said.

Revenue Principal Secretary N Manjunath Prasad told DH that rules for the sale of such lands will be formulated shortly. “We have directed deputy commissioners to compile the extent of land leased to various organisations in their respective districts,” he said, noting that 921 acres were leased to private parties in Bengaluru Urban district.

From the 921 acres, the state government used to receive an annual rent of Rs 6.50 crore per year. Sale of leased land in Bengaluru Urban alone will generate around Rs 2,250 crore at current guidance values, Prasad said. 

The government is also pushing for regularisation of unauthorised buildings on Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) land and auction of corner sites to mobilise resources due to the severe economic difficulties in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the state’s reduced share in central taxes.
