Two leopards attack and kill 60 sheep in a day, injure a dozen more

Kolar, Mar 1: Farmers and officials of the Forest Department blamed leopards for the death of nearly 60 sheep in Naganala village near Kolar on Sunday night.

According to local residents, around 10 p.m. on Sunday, at least two leopards attacked and killed a herd of 59 sheep and injured 12 others.

The sheep belonged to Naganala Ramesh, a farmer. On hearing bleats, his brother Pille Gowda rushed out to see a leopard fleeing.

Just four days ago, another sheep was allegedly killed by a leopard in Mangasandra village nearby.

Considering the large number of deaths, the forest officials believed that at least two leopards must have been there. The leopards apparently fled to the nearby hills where caves are located sheltering the felines.

“The death of so many sheep has caused loss of over Rs. 3 lakh,” Mr. Ramesh told media persons on Monday.

Honorary Wildlife Warden K.N. Tyagaraj, who inspected the spot, said, “There are possibilities of leopards straying into the area in search of dogs, which become easy prey.”

Dogs are found in large numbers in the area as the waste from poultry farms and abattoirs are dumped there.

Range Forest Officer Santhosh has assured the villagers that cages would be kept to trap the leopards. The forest staff would be deputed to guard the area, he said.

The local residents have been warned by the officials to not venture out at night.

Udupi: Another girl who appeared for SSLC exam tests covid positive

Udupi, June 30: A girl who appeared for SSLC exams in three subjects tested positive for COVID-19 in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district today.

Sheshashayana Karinja, Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) said that the 15-year-old girl had a headache and her parents took her for testing and she had tested positive for COVID-19.

She will appear for the remaining three subjects during the supplementary exams in August.

The room where the girl appeared for the exam had been sanitised. But exams would not be held in that room. All precautions have been taken in that exam centre in Kundapur taluk, Mr. Karinja said.

The other 19 students will be allowed to write their exams as there was a distance of one metre between them and there was no contact between the students during the exams, Mr. Karinja added.

It is learned that a couple of months ago, a Mumbai returnee who recovered from COVID-19 had visited the girl’s house. However, it is not clear that she got an infection from the Mumbai returnee.

It could be recalled here that a student from Hejamadi in Udupi district who was preparing for the Science exam had tested positive two days back and she is currently being treated at a hospital.

Mangaluru, Feb 12: Mangaluru City Corporation’s (MCC) mayoral elections will be held on February 28, Urban Development Department has announced.

Yashwanth V, Regional Commissioner of Mysuru will be conducting the election in the city.

The election will be held as per the 21st term reservation roster according to which the mayoral candidate has to be a BCM ‘A’ candidate and the deputy mayoral candidate must be a woman from the general category.

Women’s satyagrah, human chain mark Martyrs’ Day in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jan 30: A day-long ‘satyagrah’ by women followed by formation of human chain marked the Martyrs’ Day, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in Mangaluru.

The organisers were ‘We, the People of India’, whose sole intention was to safeguard constitution of India and raise voice against those to attack the constitution.

Amidst nationwide agitation by ‘We, the People of India’ against contentious CAA, NRC, the women of Manglauru have decided to hold satyagrah and form a human chain in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in the heart of the city on January 30.

The Satyagrah commenced at 10 a.m. At 4:30 p.m. a human chain will be formed. At 5.17p.m. when the father of the nation was gunned down 72 years ago during his evening prayer at Birla House by Godse, the demonstrators raised the slogan of unity to defeat the ideology of Godse.
