Voices of dissent ahead of Karnataka Cabinet reshuffle; some threaten to quit

June 19, 2016

Bengaluru, June 19: Even before the Congress leadership could finalise the council of ministers, dissent voices were heard from those rumoured to have been dropped. Some of them have even threatened to resign from the party if they are not made minister.Kimmane

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar was among the first to remark on the reshuffle. He put up a Facebook post late on Friday night, hinting at his exit. He thanked his supporters and well-wishers and said he never lobbied for a position and chose not to do so this time as well.

Ratnakar said his rivals called him a “white-collar politician” while many considered him “arrogant”. He said he fulfilled his ministerial responsibilities efficiently, and signed off by saying that his responsibilities lay with the electorate, and that he was not power-hungry.

Revenue Minister V?Srinivas Prasad, however, openly expressed his discontent. He attacked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who, he said, “failed” to review ministers' performance.

Prasad told reporters in Mysuru, “The chief minister failed to review the performance of ministers properly. He has not taken into account corruption charges and other allegations against some of the ministers. Though reshuffling is the discretion of Siddaramaiah, he should have properly reviewed the performance of all ministers in the past three years, before deciding to drop a few of them.”

The minister insisted that he neither lobbied for a Cabinet berth nor was against being dropped from the ministry. “I?am least bothered about the ministerial position. People are well aware of my performance,” he said.

While Prasad is learnt to have threatened to resign from the party, senior legislator Maalakareddy from Yadgir also is contemplating quitting the Congress. Among the many MLAs who were aspiring for a Cabinet berth, he was the most vocal.

“There is a lot of pressure from my followers to resign as MLA and from the party. I will go to my constituency and discuss the future course of action with party workers,” said Maalakareddy who was lobbying in New Delhi.

Maalakareddy, who was earlier a minister, questioned Siddaramaiah's decision-making. “What kind of clean administration can one expect from the current dispensation when senior and efficient leaders are not part of it,” he said.

Loyal workers ignored'

Another leader and Mayakonda MLA, Shivamurthy Naik, said the Congress had “ignored” its loyal workers and able administrators. Urging the high command to halt the reshuffle, he said, “The leaders should tell why they have not considered me.”

Kimmane returns govt vehicle, staff

Minister for Primary & Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar politely sent back the escort vehicle, staff, government vehicle, and returned to his native Kimmane after learning that he would be dropped from the Cabinet, reports DHNS from Thirthahalli (Shivamogga dist). He arrived in his home constituency Thirthahalli at 11 am and moved to his native Kimmane in a private vehicle. He directed the escort staff to return to Bengaluru. Later, he held discussions with the party leaders and the activists.

The escort personnel, however, in the first instance refused to leave the town and said that they would escort him till they get further orders from the government. Kimmane said there was no need for it and thanked them for discharging their duties effectively. He moved to his home in the town.

Speaking to reporters, Kimmane said that he has discharged his duties as minister for Primary & Secondary Education for three years to the best of his ability.

The two-time MLA said that he is neither capable nor is he interested in retaining the ministerial berth through lobbying. Kimmane said that he does not believe that the position and car would indicate the status of an individual in the society. He said that he had discussed in detail with the chief minister in advance and would abide by the decision taken by the party high command.

When questioned on ministerial berth for Sagar MLA Kagodu Thimmappa, he said he would be very glad if the veteran Congress leader is inducted into the ministry.

Bengaluru, Feb 22: Student activist Amulya Leona, who was arrested on sedition charge after she raised ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans during an anti-CAA event at Bengaluru’s Freedom Park on Thursday evening, has now criticised the organisers of the event for snatching away microphone from her hand.

The event was organised by ‘Hindu Muslim Sikh Isaai Federation’. Soon after she started pro-Pak slogans All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi rushed and tried to snatch mic from her hand. When she continued to speak, her microphone was deactivated.

According to police, the 19-year-old BA journalism student blamed her predicament on the organisers of the protest for not allowing her to complete what she wanted to say on stage.

"Maybe she had intended to say what she had recently posted on her Facebook page where she has said ‘Zindabad’ to all the countries, including India and Pakistan. But it went awry. She was not answering any of our questions, but kept saying she had not done anything wrong," a senior police officer was quoted as saying by a news paper.

The police have booked Leona for sedition and promoting enmity between groups. After her arrest, she was thoroughly questioned by the police for over two hours. After recording her statement, the police produced her before a magistrate in the wee hours of Friday. When she was taken to the judge’s residence, located at the National Games Village in Koramangala, Leona pointed towards the TV cameras and flashed a victory sign.

As the police did not seek her custody, the judge remanded her to judicial custody and she was subsequently taken to Bengaluru Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara. Her advocate is expected to file a bail application in the court on Monday.

When the police took her into custody at Freedom Park and quizzed her, she reportedly did not answer any of their questions but kept insisting that she had not done anything anti-national to be charged with sedition.

"It was the organisers’ mistake to snatch the mike from me before I completed what I had to say. Because of them, I have been arrested today. If they had given me a chance to complete what I had to say, nothing like this would have happened. Now, there is no point in telling you what I intended to speak there. But I can say that there was nothing anti-national in what I did. You can initiate action against me and my advocate will fight the case," a source, citing Leona, said.

The police recorded whatever she said as her voluntary statement and submitted it to the magistrate. "We tried to find out why she did what she did and whether there was anyone else behind her making such a statement. But it appears she had done it on her own," the police official said.

According to the police, the man identified as Ghulam has been sent to 10-day police custody.

"During the investigation of a case related to Ravi Pujari, it was found that one Ghulam is a close associate of Pujari and had helped him in extortion and other illegal activity. Ghulam was arrested from Mangalore. He was produced before a court and sent to 10-day police custody," Patil said.

The senior police officer said that further investigation is on in the matter.

Newsroom, Jan 24: BJP leader and Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje has been booked by Kerala police over a misleading and communally provocative social media post.

Karandlaje had tweeted that that Hindus from a colony in Kuttipuram in Malappuram district were denied water supply as they supported the the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

"Kerala is taking baby steps to become another Kashmir. Hindus of Kuttipuram Panchayat of Malappuram was denied water supply as they supported #CAA2019. #SevaBharati has been supplying water ever since. Will Lutyens telecast this intolerance of PEACEFULS frm God's Own Country!?," she tweeted.

A case has been booked under section 153(A) of IPC (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race etc). Karandlaje took to Twitter to slam the Kerala government, and said it had lodged a complaint against her instead of acting against the discrimination faced by dalit families of Cherukunnu.

"It is high time the society unites against these pressure tactics of a non-performing, biased left government," she said.

Karandlaje claimed that the CAA had been accepted by both houses of Parliament and people supporting the Act were facing boycott in business and were being denied basic amenities and jobs. "The CPI(M) government is blind to all these incidents across Kerala, but files a case against me for speaking the truth!" she retorted.

According to reportage from multiple outlets, the colony in Malappuram district's Kuttippuram was dependent on a private individual for water; then came accusations that they were denied the water for attending BJP's pro-CAA rally.

A resident of the colony was quoted by a newspaper, “We were denied drinking water because our husbands participated in a meeting organised to gather support for the CAA. Some people told the family that they should not give drinking water to us because CAA is a threat to the people in their community.”

However, the individual in question denied the accusation, claiming a lack of water because of technical issues.

The case was registered after a complaint by lawyer Subhash Chandran, a resident of Malappuram. Aravindan E.A., SI of Kuttippuram police, said, "From a private person's borewell, water was being provided to the people of the colony. This motor had taken for agricultural work and he was recently issued a warning by State Electricity Board. He was told that if he uses the motor for any other purpose, power supply would be disconnected. He then had stopped using the pump following the crisis worsened.”
