Bengaluru, Sept 29: The police have arrested woman and her two male associates for allegedly cheating a city based politician of Rs 9.7 lakh after befriending him on social media.

On September 25, L Srinivas, a resident of Nagarabhavi, who claimed to be a JD(S) leader, filed a complaint with Jnanabharathi police, saying an unidentified woman had befriended him on Facebook and cheated him of the amount.

Acting swiftly, police arrested P Harini alias Swati alias Swati Gowda alias Khushi, 25, Ravi Pengappa, 40 and V Prakash, 39, all residents of Thigalarapalya on Andarahalli Main Road, northwest Bengaluru. Police recovered Rs 4.5 lakh cash, an autorickshaw and a mobile phone from the trio.

According to police, Harini and Srinivas became friends on Facebook in August. "Her first message was when she wished me on Varamahalakshmi festival and we quickly became friends. She told me that she wanted to start a dance class with investment of up to Rs 2 crore. Some days later, Harini told me her father had arranged for Rs 2 crore for a building where she would start the class. The same day, she called me again, saying she was falling short of Rs 3 lakh and requested me to lend her the amount. Believing her, I handed over Rs 2.7 lakh in cash to a man sent by Harini near a bus stand on Bangalore University campus. Some days later, Harini again demanded Rs 7 lakh from me and I handed over the amount to the same man at the same place. The same evening, her mobile phone was switched off and since then she has remained incommunicado," Srinivas said in his complaint.

"While Harini is the prime accused, the other two men helped her in hatching the plan and collecting money from the politician," police said.

Recently, Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah claimed that the Congress would have won at least 10 seats in the Lok Sabha elections had it not been for the alliance with the JD(S). In response, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy of the JD(S), who headed the coalition government, blamed the Congress for its many 'conspiracies'.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Kumaraswamy said he was prompted by Siddarmaiah's claims to recall what transpired during the coalition government.

"There will never be a future alliance with Congress," Kumaraswamy declared, in a letter to his party colleagues on Wednesday. He claimed that there were many conspiracies on part of Congress, which led to the fall of the coalition government.
