Woman delivers baby inside bank while waiting in queue

December 3, 2016

Kanpur, Dec 3: A woman delivered a healthy baby girl inside a bank in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh while she was waiting in a queue with her mother-in-law to withdraw cash on Friday.

Other women present helped Sarvesha deliver the baby after an ambulance did not reach the Punjab National Bank's Jhinjhak branch. Cops then drove the mother and child to the hospital in a police van.

Sarvesha (30) was reportedly waiting at the bank to withdraw cash for the second time in two days. After failing to withdraw money on Thursday, she visited the bank again on Friday and went into labour around 4pm while waiting in a queue since morning.

“She is weak but the baby is healthy,” the woman's mother-in-law Shashi said. “I was afraid that I may lose Sarvesha but she delivered a beautiful baby and is recuperating”.

Sarvesha's husband Aashwendra dies in an accident in September this year and she was at the bank to withdraw the first instalment of the Rs 2.75 lakh compensation allotted to her, along with a house, by the government.

The Centre's move to scrap old Rs 500/1000 notes -- aimed at curbing black money -- has created chaos, with people queueing up outside banks and ATMs across the country to withdraw cash.

Bengaluru, Mar 13: Several ministers staying at the Bengaluru resort had been emotionally pressurised to leave the Congress party, said Congress leader Jitu Patwari on Thursday after he was rescued by party leader DK Shivakumar from getting arrested due to the scuffle that had broken out at Embassy Boulevard here.

"We had received information that one of the MLAs, Manoj Chaudhary, staying at the Boulevard wanted his father to bring him back home," Patwari told reporters.

He said, "We had accompanied Manoj's father to the resort but the moment we entered the restaurant at the resort, some miscreants took away Manoj to some other unknown place," Patwari told reporters.

"Meanwhile, we (Lakhan Singh and Jitu Patwari) were manhandled and taken to the police station," he added.

Patwari said that the police had started the process of arresting them but Shivakumar came to their rescue and stopped their arrest.

He further said, "The police manhandled us even though we tried to talk to them in a very calm manner."

"If the MLAs giving resignation was their decision then why is the BJP not allowing them to contact their families," the MP said.

He further said that Jyotiraditya Scindia would soon become a minister but "why are the other ministers being made scapegoats."

Earlier in the day, a Congress leader in Madhya Pradesh had said that if action on the assaulters of its two leaders is not taken then the matter will be taken to the court.

Bengaluru, Apr 27: Janata Dal-Secular leader and former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday said that the government should work towards lowering the cost of living as the spending power of the consumer has weakened, and it should impose COVID cess on the ultra-rich.

"The economy won't bounce back within a very short period. It is important to lower the cost of living as the spending power of the consumer has depleted. The government must cut the petrol/diesel prices. The loss of revenue may be offset partially by imposing COVID cess on the ultra-rich," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

"According to RBI and international economic assessment agencies, the GDP growth rate of the country is expected to fall to a historic low. Such a dire situation calls for citizen-centric measures like full or partial waivers of EMIs, rents, school fees, and other levies," he added.

Kumaraswamy further said that the government must announce schemes to save the livelihoods of people, especially those in the unorganised sector.

"It is high time the government announced schemes to save livelihoods of people, especially those in the unorganised sector. The government must provide immediate relief to farmers, construction workers, cab and auto drivers, garment workers, etc," the former Karnataka CM tweeted.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) had said on April 23 that India's economic growth is likely to hover between zero and 1.5 per cent in the current financial year as the extended COVID-19 lockdown slows down activity across most sectors.

India is under a nation-wide lockdown which was imposed on March 25 and later extended on April 14 to May 3 to stem the spread of coronavirus.
