Mangaluru, Jun 26: Mangaluru City Police Commissioner M Chandra Sekhar has finally confirmed the arrest of NaMo Brigade leader Naresh Shenoy in connection with the coldblooded murder of Mangaluru based RTI activist Vinayak Baliga.

nareshshenoyEven though rumours over the arrest of Naresh Shenoy have been doing rounds for last couple of days, the top cop said that the former was nabbed only on Sunday (June 26).

Acting on credible information, sleuths of Mangaluru CCB headed by Inspector Valentine D'Souza arrested the 39-year-old absconding murder accused at Hejamadi in Udupi district, Mr Chandra Sekhar told media persons in his office.

The top cop said that Naresh was evading Jammu and Kashmir, Gorakhpur, Lucknow and places bordering Nepal in the last three months.

Mr. Chandra Sekhar said that Shenoy's interrogation is expected to throw more light on the murder of Baliga. Baliga had filed a number of applications before the Mangaluru City Corporation and other departments under the Right to Information Act. He had also filed a suit questioning the financial dealings of Sri Venkataramana Temple on Car Street here.

Mr. Chandra Sekhar said that Baliga's activism is among the reasons for the murder. Ruling out the reported involvement of underworld operative Vikki Shetty in the murder, Mr. Chandra Sekhar said that the murder plan was hatched by Shenoy and executed by three of the arrested persons.

Mr. Sekhar commended the work by Deputy Commissioners of Police K.M. Shantaraju and Sanjeev M. Patil; Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Tilakchandra; inspectors Shantaram, Ravish Nayak, Rajesh, Valentine D'Souza and Maruti Nayak' police sub-inspectors Shyam and police constable Rajendra. These personnel would be rewarded after the submission of the supplementary charge sheet.

The development comes four days after the police filed a preliminary charge sheet in Vinayak Baliga murder case before the III Judicial Magistrate First, listing Naresh as Accused No. 1.

All the remaining six accused have already been arrested by the police and one of them is out on bail.

Naresh, son of M Namadev Shenoy, is the founder of Mangaluru unit of Namo Brigdae, later renamed as Yuva Brigade. Hence, he is popularly known as NaMo Naresh. Naresh was also running an Ayurveda medicine supplying firm at V T Road in Mangaluru.

52-year-old Baliga was brutally murdered near his house at Kodialbail in the city in the wee hours on March 21.

The police first arrested Vineet Poojary, Nishit Devadiga and Shiva alias Shivaprasad, who allegedly murdered Baliga.

Later police arrested photographer K. Manjunath Shenoy alias Manju Neereshwalya for allegedly helping Naresh in evading arrest. On June 18, police arrested Srikant, a close associate of Naresh, who was accused of hiring services of the three assailants.

The alleged inability of the Mangaluru police to nab the prime accused had led to severe discontent in Mangaluru as well as the State. Several protests were held by activists led by rationalist Narendra Nayak and also by family members of Vinayak Baliga demanding arrest of Naresh. They had accused elected representatives of being silent over the inordinate delay in arresting Naresh.

Bengaluru, May 26: Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa has been urged to cancel the proposed SSLC examinations in Karnataka and allow “mass-pass” for every student in the wake of covid-19 crisis. A group of intellectuals and educationists have put forth this demand.

In the letter released by educationist VP Niranjan Aradhya, said that they were listing the scientific reasons to the CM for cancellation of exams which are slated to be held from June 25 to July 4th.

In the letter, the intellectuals have elucidated a number of reasons for cancelling the upcoming exams. “There are close to 8.5 lakh students and 2.5 lakh staff involved. If we include parents who would drop their kids at the exam centre, around 30 lakh people will be involved in the process, making it a risky affair. Though the government has said that it will separate the students with fever or other ailments, will students admit to having fever? What if they consume paracetamol and come to write exams?” asks the letter.

Added to this, the question papers have to be sent from the district and taluk centres and there may be chances of transmission.

“Even if we conduct exams, then what about the students who have failed? Every year, around 2.5 lakh students fail in the exam. Will the government conduct the supplementary exams again? The whole process of conducting exams comes at a huge cost of Rs 20 cr to Rs 25 crore. Hence, we are suggesting that the government cancels the exams and pass the entire group of student en masse,” said the letter.

Bengaluru, Jan 14: Days after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) capped to Rs 35,000 the withdrawal limit of Sri Guru Raghavendra Co-operative Bank, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Monday reassured account holders and said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was personally monitoring the issue.

Taking to Twitter, Surya said, "I want to assure all depositors of Sri Guru Raghavendra Co-operative Bank to not panic. Hon'ble Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is appraised of matter and is personally monitoring the issue. She has assured the government will protect interests of depositors. Grateful for her concern."

The Bengaluru South MP also attached a letter in his tweet where he had appraised Sitharaman of the situation.

"Finance Minister, after speaking with the RBI governor and other authorities concerned, assured Surya that the government will do everything in its capacity to protect the interests of the depositors and the long term interests of the bank," the letter read.

It said that Surya also reached out to Sitharaman "three times on January 13" after which she reassured him that the "depositors need not panic".

RBI had, on January 10, imposed certain restrictions on Sri Gururaghavendra Sahakara Bank Niyamitha.

"In particular, a sum not exceeding Rs 35,000 of the total balance in every savings bank or current account or any other deposit account may be allowed to be withdrawn subject to conditions stated in the above RBI directions," the notification said.

The regulatory body said that the bank will continue to undertake banking business with restrictions until its financial position improves.

"These directions shall remain in force for a period of six months from the close of business of January 10 and are subject to review," it said.

The bank has been restricted from granting or renewing any loans and advances, make any investment, incur any liability including borrowal of funds and acceptance of fresh deposits, disburse or agree to disburse any payment whether in discharge of its liabilities and obligations or otherwise, enter into any compromise or arrangement and sell, transfer or otherwise dispose of any of its properties or assets except.

Bengaluru, Jun 30: In an attempt to tackle unemployment amidst covid-19 crisis, the Karnataka state government has launched a job portal connecting employers and job seekers.

The portal, 'Skill connect' ( https://skillconnect.kaushalkar.com/ ) provides region-wise and sector-wise job listings. An interested candidate can register on the portal and either apply for jobs or can also seek skill training.

As on Monday, the portal has 25 registered companies with over 2000 jobs available in various sectors.

The portal works more or less on similar lines as that of any private job portal, except that those posting jobs and candidates searching for employment will have to register with the Skill Development Department.

Launching the portal on Monday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa hoped that the portal would provide an impetus to job creation, as well as the economic revival of the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayan who is also the skill development Minister added, "All these years, there was no information and communication between job seekers and recruiters. This portal will solve that problem."

Also, until now, there hasn't been comprehensive information either on those seeking jobs or those looking for employees. The skill development efforts have not been in sync with the market. All these issues would be addressed by the portal, he said.

According to Karnataka Skill Development Authority Managing Director Ashwin Gowda, the portal has already seen a response with about 68 applicants in just a day.

Officials said even the organisations will have to register with the government while providing all documents concerned. The government aims to avoid any fake job advertisements through this. "We will also enable virtual interviews between the candidate and the employer," sources in the department told DH.

Recently, the government had also launched a portal exclusively for migrants who had returned to Karnataka from other places. This was meant to work as a skill registry.

However, the portal that was launched on Monday, went a step ahead by connecting both the prospective employers and employees, according to officials in the department.
