Anti-drug crackdown: 6 more youths arrested in Mangaluru; 6 in Puttur

Mangaluru, Oct 31: Continuing the crackdown against drug offenders, the Mangaluru city police on Mondayarrested six persons and seized 4 kg of cannabis.

The South Division’s Anti Rowdy Squad arrested Roshan Vegas, 23, Anil D’Souza, 45, Melwyin Rohit, 22, Rakshit Shetty, 21, and Yagnesh Shetty, 21. The police seized 2.2 kg cannabis including those packed in 61 packets.

According to a press release, the accused were in a house in Bejai and were allegedly attempting to sell cannabis to students in the locality. While some consumers were purchasing cannabis directly from the arrested persons, few were getting it indirectly, the police said.

In another incident, the Central Sub-division’s Anti Rowdy Squad personnel on Monday arrested the person who had reportedly supplied cannabis to seven consumers arrested by police here on Sunday.

The police said Mohammed Shakir, 23, of Gurupura Kaikamba was found selling cannabis in Kodical B Crosson Monday. The police have recovered 1.8 kg cannabis, two mobile phones, a motorcycle and some cash. A case under Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Act was registered against Shakir at the Urva Police Station.

In Puttur

Personnel of cybercrimes, narcotics and economic offences police station led by inspector K Tharanath K last weekend nabbed four youths on charges of consuming ganja near Padil railway quarters at Kasba village in Puttur taluk.

The youths were smoking ganja in cigarettes when police spotted and apprehended them. The accused were taken for a medical test to a private hospital in Deralakatte where it was proved they were indeed using ganja. A case under NDPS Act has been registered in Puttur town police station.

In a related incident, Puttur town police on Sunday arrested two persons who were creating nuisance under the influence of drugs near KSRTC bus station. The duo - Muhammad Shafi, 25 and Asif, 19, were found abusing people when they were apprehended by police on regular patrol. Medical test of the duo confirmed the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol, a derivative of cannabis, in their urine.

Bengaluru, Mar 27: In a preparatory measure to tackle any exigency in the backdrop of spread of coronavirus, the Karnataka government has asked district administrations to use as quarantine centres the residential schools and hostels that come the under Social Welfare department.

"Wherever necessary, these residential schools and hostels can be converted as quarantine facility without any extra cost by the district administrations," Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol said in a statement.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Karnataka stood at 55, including two deaths and three discharged persons, as on Thursday.

Karjol, who is also the Minister in-charge of Social Welfare department said, in view of holidays for educational institutions, there were no students staying in the residential schools and hostels and hence they can be used for quarantine purpose.

All the residential schools at hostels in districts and taluks are spacious and have all required facilities like rooms, kitchen, toilets, bathrooms, libraries among others, the Minister said adding most of them were located away from densely populated areas.

Hassan, Feb 26: A 35-year-old poachers died on the spot by his fellow man accidentally, mistaking him as animal at Yedikumari Kaginahere forest areas near Sakaleshpura in the district early hours Tuesday, police sources said.

The deceased has been identified as Harish.

The incident happened when ten poachers went hunting for wild animals in the Yedikumari Kaginahare forest areas.

Bengaluru, Feb 24: Fugitive underworld don Ravi Poojary, with more than 90 criminal charges pending against him, was brought to the city in the wee hours of Monday after he was arrested from Senegal in South Africa.

Police said that he was wanted in more than 92 criminal cases. In Bengaluru alone, he was involved in more than 39 cases, including double murder of Ravi and Shobana in 2007, an attempt to murder attack on Mantri developers 2009, extortion and other crimes etc. He had committed crimes in various parts of the state including Myusuru, Hubballi, he had involved in extortion, threatening builders, politicians, etc.

"Though Senegal police had nabbed him about six months back to get him to India it took more than six months since there was no agreement to deport criminals from that state to us. However, now all legal hurdles have been removed and we have succeeded in bringing him", a top police official told media.

A team of Bengaluru Police headed by Additional Director General of Police Amar Kumar Pandey, Joint Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil reached Senegal on Saturday and brought him to the city by Air France flight.

Ravi Poojari was wanted in cases of extortion and murder and was active in the Mumbai underworld. He was part of the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's gang and later is said to have worked with 'Chota Rajan' for some time. Claiming to be an enemy of Dawood, Poojari reportedly finished off all his associates and anti-India elements in the country. His men were involved in a shootout on the Shabanam Developers office in Bengaluru in which a woman staffer was killed.

He is also said have been involved in the shootout case of Shahid Azmi, an advocate from Mumbai. There are cases against him in Kerala, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
