CM BS Yediyurappa defends Mangaluru firing, says cops reined in mob

Bengaluru, Dec 23: Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday defended the Mangaluru police firing incident that left two persons dead during a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), saying the men in khaki were carrying out their duty to protect the innocent people and prevent a mob from running amok.

The CM told reporters: “Police opened fire when the mob tried to storm a police station in Mangaluru and loot arms in its custody on Thursday. Should police keep quiet if a mob tries to disturb peace and indulges in arson? Aren’t police duty bound to protect the innocent people and their property?”

The CM’s statement comes hours after former chief minister and JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy blamed the BJP government for Mangaluru unrest, and demanded the removal of officers behind the police firing and home minister Basavaraj Bommai. After 48 hours of curfew and suspension of mobile internet services, Mangaluru is limping back to normal.

The CM directed Dakshina Kannada district administration to give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of two persons killed in police firing. Kumaraswamy handed over Rs 5 lakh compensation to the bereaved families.

Bengaluru witnessed two rallies — one for and the other against the controversial law — on Sunday. A 31-year-old man who was on his way home after a pro-CAA rally was stabbed allegedly by four miscreants in the afternoon.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar on Thursday suggested that the cost of building and installing a new statue of Nada Prabhu Kempegowda in the Bengaluru airport should be borne by Kempegowda international airport (KIAL).

Shivakumar wrote to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and welcomed the decision of erecting a statute of Bengaluru founder Kempegowda at KIAL but he also suggested that the chief minister should not spend state government's money on this.

He said that the Karnataka government has done many favours to airport authority earlier.

Chikkamagaluru, June 6: The Chikkamagaluru district has become free from confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The last two of the 16 covid patients in the district were discharged today after they were treated and tested negative.

P 2765, a 28-year-old man and P 2766, a 38-year-old man were discharged, said Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham. Nine others were discharged from hospital yesterday.

Till May 22, Chikkamagaluru district had not recorded any positive and had remained a green zone till then.

However, with the influx of stranded people from Maharashtra and Delhi, the district had registered 16 covid positive cases.

 “As on today, there are no active covid-19 cases in the district. However, we should be attentive and take all the precautionary measurers,” the DC said.

The officer has appealed to the public to maintain social distancing in public places and wear masks.

Mangaluru, May 25: D V Sadananda Gowda, Union Minister for Chemical and Fertilizer, has once again written to the Ministry of External Affairs urging to take steps to operate more repatriation flights from Gulf countries to Karnataka. 

In his second letter in 10 days addressed to Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Union Minister for External Affairs, expressed regret over not giving due priority for the repatriation of Kannadigas in the middle east during the extended second phase of Vande Bharat Mission. 

"I shall be grateful if you could personally intervene and instuct the concerned in arranging flights to Mangaluru and Bengaluru from Gulf countries in existing schedule itself," Mr Gowda urged Mr Jayashankar.
