Don’t believe rumours about EVMs: Election Commission tells voters

Bengaluru, Mar 27: Downplaying the experts’ warning over the possibility of the tampering of electronic voting machine, election officials have urged the voters to be wary of “rumours” being spread about the EVM functioning.

“EVMs cannot be tampered with and there are adequate technical and administrative safeguards in place. It is a proven machine being used since 1999 and it is highly secure,” Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar said here during a workshop for media persons.

“In 2010, a professor in the U.S. stated that he can tamper with the machine. However, there is no connection with what he said and the EVMs.

His claims have been disproved. The Supreme Court has also allowed using of VVPATs,” he said.

For those who have doubts about the EVM and VVPAT machine not working well, he said: “Voters can give an application to the presiding officer after which the voter will be allowed to cast his vote. But this will be an open vote which will be watched by polling agents as well as officers. If the voter fails to prove his claim, he is liable to be imprisoned for six months.”

Citing three examples in the recent elections in Gujarat, he said that while three voters claimed that the votes shown in VVPAT differed from what they had opted for, only one came forward with the application. “After he failed to prove his claim, legal action has been initiated against him,” he said.

Mysuru, Jan 19: Karnataka Rural Development and Panchyat Raj Minister K S Eshwarappa on Sunday claimed that Popular Front of India and Social Democratic Party of India have been indulging in anti-national activities.

Talking to media persons here, he said the government is mulling to ban and take action against PFI and its political arm SDPI.

It was recommended even during the previous government, but it was not taken seriously, he added.

He said that the BJP will ensure that all the MLAs who were instrumental in the party coming to power (the then-disqualified MLAs who joined BJP from Congress and JDS recently and won the bypoll subsequently) will not be let down and be given suitable posts in the government.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Amid difficulties being faced by COVID-19 patients in getting beds, the Karnataka government on Wednesday made bed allocation display board mandatory in all hospitals registered under Karnataka Private Medical Establishment (KPME).

"It is made mandatory that all hospitals registered under KPME in Karnataka State should display at the reception counter, a bed allocation display board," a notification issued by the state government read.

"It should display the name of the hospital, the total number of beds (as per of KPME registration) and the total number of beds allocated for COVID-19 patients referred by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)," it said.

The notification further stressed that the data must corroborate with the data of the central bed allocation system of BBMP. The display board should be arranged by July 16.

Non-compliance to the order issued by the state government will attract punishment under relevant sections of the Disaster Management Act 2005 and Indian Penal Code, the order read.

The state government on June 23 issued a notification making it mandatory to reserve 50 per cent of the beds in private hospitals to treat COVID-19 patients referred by public health authorities.
