Hindu-Muslim amity to the fore at this Urus

Kasaragod, Jan 22: The annual Urus at the 12th century Pulingome Makham, a Sunni pilgrim centre here, has religious harmony written all over it. In fact, the festivities are finalised only in consultation with a Hindu family in the area.

In strict adherence to tradition, the Pulingome Juma Masjid Jamaat committee, this year too, invited senior members of the Kamballur Kottayil family to the mosque on January 15 to finalise the festivities for the six-day event scheduled from April 11.

After the conclusion of the evening prayers, the Imam formally announced the schedule in the presence of invited guests from the family on the mosque premises, K.K. Shyam Kumar, a member of the family said.

The function was followed by a mass prayer. The guests and the local people who converged at the mosque were offered refreshments. This time, office-bearers of the nearby Sankara-Narayana-Dharmasatha temple were also invited to the ceremony, Mr. Shyam Kumar said.

Legend

Legend has it that the ancestors of the Kamballur Kottayil family migrated from “Telecherry (Thalassery) Kottayam” in the 12th century and the local dynasty chieftain vested with them control of land holdings in the region.

The family was responsible for maintaining law and order. A group of Muslims approached them, seeking permission to set up a mosque, which was granted. Eventually, permission was also granted to conduct Uroos. For around 300 years, the Urus schedule is being fixed in consultation with the family.

The partition of the family in 1942, upheld by the South Canara Civil Court in Mangaluru, validated three religious institutions falling under it — Kamballur Bhaghavathy Temple, Shankara-Narayana-Dharmasastha Temple at Pulingom, and strangely, the Pulingom Makham.

Later, the mosque came under the administration of the Pulingome Juma Masjid Jamaat committee, which too chose to adhere to the age-old tradition.

Such act is not part of Islam. It does not promote grave worship. Tawheed (Worshipping Allah alone) is the foundation of Islam. The acts mentioned above will be regarded as Associating partners with Allah (SWT)

Bengaluru, Jul 2: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Thursday launched the ICU Telecard, developed by CISCO to address the concerns of doctors treating coronavirus patients.

Wi-Fi networks and Cisco Health platform help to protect the entire medical team dealing with the infected person by ensuring that doctors do not have to be inside isolation wards and COVID ICUs.

The ICU Telecard has been installed at Victoria and KC General hospital.

"This technology is a necessity to safeguard health of our doctors and it should be implemented in all hospitals. We will discuss about this in the task force meeting and decide regarding the use of this technology in all COVID hospitals in the state. For now, we have installed one at Victoria and KC General hospital" said the minister.

Addressing the complaints of non-release of dead bodies without coronavirus testing, Sriramulu said: "Experts have discussed the same in a meeting with the Chief Minister yesterday, who has ordered for an increase in the number of testing labs. This should resolve the issue. We are also contemplating the conduct of plasma therapy in all districts."

The minister said that the government has also decided to reserve two ambulances for every ward to address the issue of non-availability and will procure more ambulances on rent if the existing ones are insufficient.

He further informed that those who were seen dumping the bodies in a pit in Ballari have been suspended and notice has also been served to officials in Yadagiri.

"We will ensure such instances do not repeat in the state," he said.

Bengaluru, May 22: Police commissioner Bhaskar Rao on Friday said the next two Sundays will be ‘full curfew days’ and the city will be under complete lockdown between 7pm Saturday and 7am Monday.

Addressing the media, the top cop said all essential services will be excluded from the curfew. “People attending weddings and other ceremonies can travel. Those wanting to buy food products or medicines too can step out. However, like in lockdown 1.0, people found loitering unnecessarily will be punished,” he said.

According to Rao, city roads will be barricaded like how it was done during lockdown 1.0 and 2.0.

A senior police officer told TOI that during this period, vehicles could be seized under the Disaster Management Act-2005. “So, we request the public not to come out unnecessarily. If we find people roaming in vehicles, we shall seize the rides and owners will have to approach the court later to get them released,” he said.

The government has extended the lockdown till May 31, which includes two Sundays.
Earlier in the day, the state government allowed inter-state travel from Karnataka with the consent of the receiving state. Praveen Sood, Karnataka DG and IGP, said, “Inter-state pass is not required to go out of Karnataka as long as you have the consent of the receiving state. Due to the lockdown, migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons are stranded at different places. They would be allowed to move as usual.”
