Mangaluru, Oct 27: A week after the principal of city-based Milagress College was thrashed by a student for denying him examination hall ticket on grounds of attendance shortage, a group of Muslim students on Thursday staged a protest at the entrance of the college against the alleged communal discrimination exhibited by the college authorities.

Activists of Campus Front of India, a students' organisation, also have joined agitating students and their parents, who claim that they were denied permission to appear for examinations just because they belong to the religion of a student who had attacked the principal.

Among those who were denied hall tickets include 21 Muslim students belonging and 1 Christian student. The agitators believe that the college tried hide their real intention by including one non-Muslim student in the list.

The protesters alleged that the college authorities deliberately targeting Muslim students and trying to harm their future after the assault on principal by a Muslim student. “None of us supported the student who thrashed principal. We all have condemned it and protested against the heinous act. However, the college authorities are trying to give communal tinge to the entire episode,” claimed a hijab-clad girl who is one among the 22 agitating students.

When the students refused to vacate the place the collage authorities informed the Mangaluru North Police. Within a few minutes inspector Shantharam and team reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Speaking to coastaldigest.com, one of the agitating girls said that around 90 degree students had shortage of attendance and the college had announced their names.
But, the college allowed most of them to appear for examinations except 22 students.
“What kind of decision is this? We never expected that the college authorities would resort to such an injustice,” she lamented.

Another student, who was accompanied by his parents at the protest site, said that the 22 degree students were asked to fetch their parents to the college last week. “Our parents are coming to college everyday for past few days to meet the concerned authorities. However, the principal and other authorities deliberately avoiding them,” he complained.

He also said that when the college authorities realised that all the 22 students would stage a protest, they personally contacted a few students and promised them to give hall ticket on certain conditions and asked them not to support the other students.

However, the students realised their trick and demanded hall tickets for all the 22 students including girls, he said.

“If they disallow all the 90 students who faced attendance shortage to appear for examination we cannot complain against the college. But, they gave hall tickets to majority of them and exhibited discrimination against Muslim students. We want to bring this issue to light,” he said.

The 22 students who are denied hall ticket are:

I BBA (2 Students): Yasir Arafat, Mohammed Afrid

II BBM (6 Students): Mahammed Marzook, Mohammed Shahid, Usama, Atijamma Thazweena, Mohammed Asfak, Shahezan M

III BBM (7 Students): Mehraz A S, Saxson Joyster Bhagyan, Mohammed Nizamuddin, Mohammed Shanavaz, Muhammad Sinan U H, Amal Mariam, Anwaz

II B.Com (5 Students): Ahamad Sadat Nawfal, Ansaf Mohammed, Fazil Ibrahim, Zulaika Mehroofa, Mohammad Sinan

III B.Com (2 Students): Mohammed Zahid, Sheik Ibrahim Saheel

I second what Ahmed (Al-Ain) has said. If the Muslims in India were peaceful like the Parsees, I dont see any trouble with RSS or Hindus. Most Hindus are good people.

Very sad to see Muslim brothers supporting immature acts of Muslim students .very bad .by doing like this what are we trying to prove .comment no 16.clearly pointed and I really appreciate that gentleman.if we have problem with other community owned colleges ..why should we join at first place .go and join Muslim owned institutes .quality of education is utter flop in our institutes .for god sake let's not back students who slap principal and who protest inspite of not having attendance ....mainly gulf industries who are owned by Muslims don't hire Muslims for top position becoz on the basis expertise Hindus and Christians and also brahmins are first priority for them .our education must reflect in our action and internal transformation must happen .

If Muslims attendance is shortage then of course they are the one to be punished. I wonder parents are not willing to question students why there is such shortage of attendance. What they were doing during college hours,is their real intention is to study or something else?

If Nithyananda plays his game with young girls.
if Hitler killed many jews..
Blame them not the entire community...

Intelligent people will blame only those who make fault .
the people who think evil will try to blame the whole community instead of the one who committed fault.

That's a CLEAR injustice

Muslims in Mangaluru suffered a series of injuries and insults in recent days. These are messages from the God. we must over come this situation by changing ourselves. We can build 10000 times better education institution than Milagres and Aloysius. But why we did not build? We will continue to suffer if we dont unite and establish educational institutions now.

Hmm.. Coastal Karnataka has many reported problems between Muslims and College Authorities. No doubt, that discrimination against certain group or community of students has been on the rise recently.
Let's hope for justice.

But what were the students doing without attending classes? Shortage of attendance of over 90 students... Parents, Take note!

This is too much...! Principal targetting Muslim community for 2 slap from 1 student.
Now is clear, this principal was not deserved for only 2 slap, need more than that.
CFI good job. Fight for justice and we all with you. Teach that communal Principal in legal way.

Student hit Principal is Wrong we Condemn. No Muslim will support that punish him as per the Law. Do not show any Mercy on him. Let law take its own Action. But as per the report among 90 students who are facing shortage of attendance only SELECTED 21 MUSLIMS were targeted which is not at all acceptable and the Higher Authority or the Govt should interfere and should give justice to the students. Either you reject all 90 students or else issue the hall ticket to all. Dont bring Religion in between.

Stop politicising & targetting towards particular community is not fair.... student who attacked principal is condemned by everyone including campus front.... Making suffer to particular community students is not fair... Milagres management should handle this issue very seriously & solve it....

‘Go to Pakistan’ has probably been most often used phrase used against Muslims in India. Recently in yet another such incident the SP of Meerut, UP has been in the news and a video is circulating where he, Akhilesh Narayan Singh, is allegedly using the jibe ‘Go to Pakistan’. In the video he is seen shouting at protestors at Lisari Gate area in Meerut, “The ones (protestors) wearing those black or yellow armbands, tell them to go to Pakistan”. His seniors stood by him calling it ‘natural reaction to shouting of pro Pakistan slogans. Many BJP leaders like Uma Bhararti also defended the officer. Breaking ranks with fellow politicians, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi of BJP, criticised the said officer and asked for suitable action against him. Interestingly this is same Naqvi, who earlier when the beef related arguments were going on; had stated that those who want to eat beef can go to Pakistan.

Interestingly this is probably the first time that any BJP leader has opposed the use of this jibe against the Indian Muslims. True to the dominance of trolls who support divisive politics, Naqvi has been trolled on the issue. As such vibe ‘Go to Pakistan’ has been a strong tool in the hands of aggressive elements to demonise Muslims in general and to humiliate those with Muslim names. One recalls that when due to the rising intolerance in the society many eminent writers, film makers were returning their awards, Aamir Khan said that his wife Kiran Rao is worried about their son. Immediately BJP worthies like Giriraj Singh pounced on him that he can go to Pakistan.

The strategy of BJP combine has been on one hand to use this ‘go to Pakistan’ to humiliate Muslims on the other from last few years another Pakistan dimension has been added. Those who are critical of the policies of BJP-RSS have on one hand been called as anti National and on the other it is being said that ‘they are speaking the language of Pakistan’.

Use of Pakistan to label the Muslims and dissidents here in India has been a very shrewd tool in the hands of communal forces. One remembers that the ‘cricket nationalism’ was also the one to use it. In case of India-Pakistan cricket match, the national hysteria, which it created, was also aiming at Indian Muslims. What was propagated was that Indian Muslims cheer for Pakistan victory and they root for Pakistan. There was an unfortunate grain of truth in this as a section of disgruntled, alienated Muslim did that. That was not the total picture, as most Indian Muslims were cheering for Indian victory. Many a Muslim cricketers contributed massively to Indian cricket victories. The cricket legends like Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Irfan Pathan, and Mohammad Azaruddin are just the few among the long list of those who brought glories for India in the field of cricket.

Even in matters of defence there are legions of Muslims who contributed to Indian efforts in the war against Pakistan all through. Abdul Hamid’s role in 1965 India Pak war and the role of Muslim soldiers in Kargil war will be part of Indian military history. There have been generals in army who contributed in many ways for the role which military has been playing in service of the nation. General Zamiruddin Shah, when asked to handle Gujarat carnage, does recount how despite the lack of support from local administration for some time, eventually the military was able to quell the violence in some ways.

During freedom movement Muslims were as much part of the struggle against British rule as any other community. While the perception has been created that Muslims were demanding Pakistan, the truth is somewhere else. It was only the elite section of Muslims who supported the politics of Muslim League and later the same Muslim League could mobilize some other section and unleash the violence like ‘Direct Action’ in Kolkata, which in a way precipitated the actual process of partition, which was the goal of British and aim of Muslim League apart from this being the outcome of ‘Two Nation theory’.

Not much is popularized about the role of great number of Muslims who were part of National movement, who steadfastly opposed the idea and politics which led to the sad partition of the subcontinent. Few excellent accounts of the role of Muslims in freedom movement like Syed Nasir Ahmad, Ubaidur Rahman, Satish Ganjoo and Shamsul Islam are few of these not too well know books which give the outline of the great Muslim freedom fighters like Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Ansari Brothers, Ashfaqulla Khan.

Immediately after partition tragedy the communal propaganda did the overdrive to blame the whole partition process on Muslim separatism, this totally undermined the fact that how poor Muslims had taken out massive marches to oppose the Lahore Resolution of separate Pakistan moved by Mohammad Ali Jinnah. The whole Muslim community started being seen as the homogenous, ‘The other’ and other misconceptions started against the community, the one’s relating them to atrocities of Muslim kings started being made as the part of popular folklore, leading the Hate against them. This Hate in turn laid the foundation of violence and eventual ghettoisation of this community.

The interactive-syncretism prevalent in India well presented by Gandhi-Nehru was pushed to the margins as those believing in pluralism did not actively engage with the issue. The economic marginalization of this community, coupled with the increasing insecurity in turn led to some of them to identify with Pakistan, and this small section was again presented as the representative of the whole Muslim community.

Today the battle of perception is heavily tilted against the Muslim community. It is a bit of a surprise as Naqvi is differing from his other fellow colleagues to say that the action should be taken against the erring police officer. The hope is that all round efforts are stepped up to combat the perception constructed against this religious minority in India.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: All efforts would be made to control the spread of coronavirus in the city and there will be no fresh lockdown, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Friday said, asserting that improving economic situation of the state is also equally important.

Though the state capital was considered a model for the entire country in COVID management and has seen a spike in cases during the last few days, the pandemic can be controlled if everyone cooperated, he said.

His remarks come a day after Revenue Minister R Ashoka said Bengaluru is still 'safe' compared to the COVID-19 situation in other cities and states and had ruled out a fresh lockdown for now, putting to rest speculations that it was planning such a move in view of spike in cases.

As of Thursday evening, a total of 1,791 COVID-19 cases, including 78 deaths and 505 discharges, had been reported in the city while the state's tally stood at 10,560 compared to just 3,408 cases as on June 1. The state capital has the highest number of cases among the districts.

"There is no question of imposing lockdown for any reason. In some areas (with high case load) we have already implemented lockdown, other than those places there is no question of it being implemented in other places," Yediyurappa told reporters here.

Improving the economic situation of the state was also equally important, he said ahead of his meeting with Ministers, MLAs and MPs of all parties from Bengaluru to discuss measures to control COVID-19.

"I will discuss with all MLAs including those from opposition and Ministers from Bengaluru and come to some decision. With their cooperation we will make all honest efforts to control the pandemic in Bengaluru," he added.

Earlier, there had been intense speculation after some ministers said the government may have to consider re-imposing the lockdown, eased in phases from the middle of last month, in view of continuing spike in new cases in the past several days. Bengaluru was a "model" to the entire country in COVID management, but in recent days cases have increased, Yediyurappa said, adding to control it cooperation from everyone was necessary.

"I have confidence that if everyone (MLAs) pays special attention in their respective assembly constituency, COVID can be controlled," he said. Meanwhile, official sources said the Chief Minister has given Revenue Minister Ashoka the charge of overseeing the COVID management in the city.
