Growing Israeli passion for business with India

Bilateral trade between India and Israel has gone up from a mere $120 million to $5 billion since the two nations formally established relations in 1992, but as president of the Israel-India Friendship Association (IIFA) she sees a much higher potential.

"I want to show the beauty of India to the world," says Bernstein-Reich, who serves as co-producer of the "Bharati Show - The Wonder that is India", a Bollywood style show that has gone all around the world over the last several years.

She also runs a five-session course on doing business with India with a Hindi class and bits of history, politics and culture thrown in.

There Israeli business people learn to say phrases like "Kya haal hai?" (How are you?), "Phir milenge" (See you later), the meaning of things like "Diwali, Ganesh and Bindi" and even the Indian craze about the game of cricket.

"Once they understand culture they can do business," Bernstein-Reich tells a group of visiting Indian and Indian-American journalists and policy leaders as she lists a wide range of areas that can take Israeli-Indian trade to a projected $15 billion in a few years.

Dan Catarivas, director of the division of foreign trade and international relations at the Manufacturers Association of Israel and a former government official, agrees seeing "much more potential" in the India-Israel-US trade relationship, particularly in the area of high technology.

Noting that Israel was in the process of negotiating a Free Trade Agreement with India, Catarivas said while transfer of technology to China was fraught with risks because of US restrictions, there was no such danger in working with India in hi-tech and IT areas.

Eitan Yudilevich, executive director of the Israel-US Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation (BIRD), which promotes strategic partnerships between Israeli and American companies in various technological fields, concurs.

Yudilevich, a former head of the missiles division at Rafael Advanced Defence systems, the Israeli authority for development of weapons and military technology, who played a key role in the development of Israel's famous Iron dome, suggests the Singapore model for hi-tech trade with India.

This would have military cooperation spilling over or providing a spin-off in civilian areas, he says, noting that the Israelis were keen on going to India, shopping for partners there as long as the Americans don't mind.

Currently India is the largest customer of Israeli military equipment and Israel is the second-largest military partner of India after the Russian Federation. The military business between the two nations is worth around $9 billion.

Diamonds are another area of major trade between the two nations, but there is great scope for expansion in areas of agriculture, solar energy, energy, water treatment, desalination, clean technology and much more.

The only problem is their business culture, says Bernstein-Reich. While Israelis come straight to the point, Indians like to negotiate endlessly and reopen settled issues, she says and thus advises her clients: "Leave some room for bargaining."

Paris, Jul 2: Several interacting exoplanets have already been spotted by satellites. But a new breakthrough has been achieved with, for the first time, the detection directly from the ground of an extrasolar system of this type.

An international collaboration including CNRS researchers has discovered an unusual planetary system, dubbed WASP-148, using the French instrument SOPHIE at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (CNRS/Aix-Marseille Universite).

The scientists analysed the star's motion and concluded that it hosted two planets, WASP-148b and WASP-148c. The observations showed that the two planets were strongly interacting, which was confirmed from other data.

Whereas the first planet, WASP-148b, orbits its star in nearly nine days, the second one, WASP-148c, takes four times longer. This ratio between the orbital periods implies that the WASP-148 system is close to resonance, meaning that there is enhanced gravitational interaction between the two planets. And it turns out that the astronomers did indeed detect variations in the orbital periods of the planets.

While a single planet, uninfluenced by a second one, would move with a constant period, WASP-148b and WASP-148c undergo acceleration and deceleration that provides evidence of their interaction.

The study will shortly be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

In a bid to help struggling small businesses in Covid-19 times, Facebook has introduced Shops to help set up a single online store for customers to access on both Facebook and Instagram.

While Facebook Shops is being rolled out from Wednesday, the company will introduce Instagram Shop, a new way to discover and buy products in Instagram Explore, this summer, starting in the US.

The social networking giant also announced that it will invest in features across its family of apps to inspire people to shop and make buying and selling online easier.

"Creating a Facebook Shop is free and simple. Businesses can choose the products they want to feature from their catalogue and then customise the look and feel of their shop with a cover image and accent colours that showcase their brand," Facebook said in a statement late Tuesday.

Any seller, no matter their size or budget, can bring their business online and connect with customers wherever and whenever it's convenient for them.

People can find Facebook Shops on a business' Facebook Page or Instagram profile, or discover them through stories or ads.

"From there, you can browse the full collection, save products you're interested in and place an order — either on the business' website or without leaving the app if the business has enabled checkout in the US," informed the company.

Last month, Facebook announced $40 million in grants for 10,000 small businesses in the US to help them get through these challenging time.

The grants will go to small businesses in 34 locations where Facebook employees live and work.

The company said that in Facebook Shops, users will be able to message a business through WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram Direct to ask questions, get support, track deliveries and more.

In the future, they will be able to view a business' shop and make purchases right within a chat in WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram Direct.

Later this year, Facebook will add a new shop tab in the navigation bar, so people can get to Instagram Shop in just one tap.

Facebook said it is making it easier to shop for products in real time.

Soon, sellers, brands and creators will be able to tag products from their Facebook Shop or catalogue before going live and those products will be shown at the bottom of the video so people can easily tap to learn more and purchase.

"We're starting to test this with businesses on Facebook and Instagram, and we'll roll it out more broadly in the coming months," said the company.

Facebook is also working with partners like Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, ChannelAdvisor, CedCommerce, Cafe24, Tienda Nube and Feedonomics to support small businesses.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 12: In the wake of COVID-19 outbreak, Internet service providers in Kerala have agreed to step up the network capacity by 30 to 40 per cent of the present capacity to meet the demand, especially in view of the spurt in work-at-home mode.

"The decision was made at a meeting of representatives of various telecom service providers in Kerala circle and officials of the Telecommunication Department convened by the Secretary, Electronics and IT, following a direction by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to look into the issue," said a press release by the IT Department.

The decision will be beneficial for those working in IT institutions. The government has come out with a set of suggestions to avoid social gatherings at public places in view of coronavirus spread. Telecom service providers have assured the government that they are well equipped to face the current situation.

The major part of Internet consumption in Kerala is made available through local servers. Moreover, global Internet traffic is very low as compared to the overall consumption. So, increasing the capacity won't be difficult, service providers informed.

"Complaints regarding the low availability of the Internet due to the spurt in consumption of the Internet can be made to the service providers to their complaint redressal number or inform state government call centre (155300). But complaints regarding the insufficiency in the current network infrastructure should be strictly avoided," said the release.

The IT Department will also demand daily reports from various telecom service providers. By analysing these reports, steps for remedies will be taken after bringing the sudden increase in consumption to the service providers.
