New Delhi, July 24: The state-owned oil companies on Monday announced another hike in petrol prices, by a minimum of 70 paise per litre, excluding state levies, citing surge in international oil prices and depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar.

The hike will come into effect from Monday midnight. “As a consequence of the said revision, increase in selling price shall vary from Rs 0.70 per litre to Rs 0.91 per litre depending upon the state taxes,” the oil companies said.

Petrol will now cost Rs 68.48 per litre in Delhi, Rs 77.30 in Bangalore, Rs 74.23 in Mumbai, Rs 73.16 in Chennai, Rs 75.80 in Hyderabad and Rs 73.61 in Kolkata. The price in Delhi will go up by 70 paise, while in Bangalore and Hyderabad, the hike will be 91 paise.

In Mumbai, petrol will cost 88 paise more, while in Chennai and Kolkata, the prices will go up by 89 paise and 87 paise respectively. Until now, a litre of petrol cost Rs 67.78 in Delhi, Rs 76.39 in Bangalore, Rs 74.89 in Hyderabad, Rs 72.27 in Chennai, Rs 73.35 in Mumbai and Rs 72.74 in Kolkata.

“The price revision in other states will vary depending upon the respective rates of state VAT or sales tax,” Indian Oil said. The hike follows two rounds of reductions in the last one month. The prices were reduced by Rs 2.02 per litre on June 3 and Rs 2.46 a litre on June 29.

Fresh revision

“The (fresh) revision (in petrol prices) has been necessitated due to increasing international oil prices and movement in INR-USD exchange rate,” the oil companies said.

Average price of Indian basket of crude is $ 101.28 per barrel while international MS price is $ 111.59 a barrel. The value of rupee is 55.36 against a USD. “At these levels, IOC is incurring losses of about Rs 1.41 per litre on MS sales in the domestic market.

However, as the price movement is quite volatile, it has been decided that an increase of Rs. 0.70/ litre (excluding state levies) may be effected at this juncture and the situation watched for some time depending upon which a further view will be taken at an appropriate time,” the Indian Oil said.

State-owned oil firms have now abandoned the practice of revising petrol prices on the 1st and 16th of every month. Price is now revised on a random date.

Washington, Feb 14: The United States has called for making Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed accountable for his involvement in the planning of "numerous acts of terrorism, including 2008 Mumbai attacks". "We continue to call for Hafiz Saeed to be held accountable for his involvement in the planning of numerous acts of terrorism, including 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 innocent people, including 6 Americans," US State Department spokesperson said on Thursday (February 13, 2020).

US State Department spokesperson said this while commenting on the Saeed`s conviction in terror financing cases.

The spokesperson said Hafiz Saeed`s conviction on terror financing is a step towards curtailing the operation of a terrorist group that threatens peace and stability in South Asia.

"We urge Pakistan to continue to take appropriate legal action against individuals who commit acts of terrorism, raise funds for, or advocate for terrorism," the official said.

On Wednesday, Alice Wells, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of US for South and Central Asian Affairs had termed the conviction of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed as an "important step forward" towards holding terrorist organisation LeT "accountable for its crimes".

"Today`s conviction of Hafiz Saeed and his associate is an important step forward - both toward holding LeT accountable for its crimes and for #Pakistan in meeting its international commitments to combat terrorist financing," she tweeted.

"And as @ImranKhanPTI has said, it is in the interest of #Pakistan`s future that it not allow non-state actors to operate from its soil," she said in another tweet.

An anti-terrorism court in Lahore, Pakistan on Wednesday sentenced Mumbai terror attack mastermind and chief of the banned Jamaat-ud -Dawa (JuD) Hafiz Saeed to five-and-a-half years in prison each in two terror financing cases.

Pakistan based Dawn reported that he was slapped with a prison sentence of five-and-a-half years and a fine of Rs15,000 in each case and the sentences of both cases will run concurrently.

Daman, Mar 3: A BJP councillor was shot dead on Monday in the Union Territory of Daman, police said.

Salim Memon was sitting in his motorcycle showroom when three to four unidentified persons shot four to five bullets after asking a visitor there to move out, an official said quoting eye-witnesses.

While fleeing, they also shot two rounds close to this visitor who was standing outside, he said.

"Memon was rushed to a hospital in Marwad area but was declared dead on arrival. CCTV footage is being scanned to nab the culprits," said Daman Superintendent of Police Vikramjit Singh.

Memon was elected to Daman municipality as a Congress candidate but then switched over to the BJP.

Sources said Memon, who also has a land brokerage business, had come out of jail a few months back in connection with a case of rivalry.

New Delhi, Jun 18: Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday removed Sanjay Jha as a party spokesperson, days after he wrote a newspaper article criticising the party. She also approved the appointment of Abhishek Dutt and Sadhna Bharti as national media panelists for the Congress.

"Congress president has also approved that Sanjay Jha be dropped as AICC spokesperson with immediate effect," the party said in an official statement.

In the article published a few days ago, Mr Jha had said, "The Congress has demonstrated extraordinary lassitude, and its lackadaisical attitude towards its own political obsolescence is baffling..."

"I would like to call a spade a spade here and a shovel: there has been no serious effort to get the party up and running with any sense of urgency," he had said in the article in a national newspaper.

"There are many in the party who cannot comprehend this perceptible listlessness. For someone like me, for instance, permanently wedded to Gandhian philosophy and Nehruvian outlook that defines the Congress, it is dismaying to see its painful disintegration," he had said.
