Bengaluru, Oct 17: Here's good news for passport applicants in Karnataka. The Regional Passport Office is taking all necessary steps to ensure that the applicants get the passports within 10 days.

passport“From the time an applicant applies for a passport to passport delivery and completion of police verification, it should take about 10 days,” said P S Karthigeyan, regional passport officer-Karnataka.

"In September, we took an average of 13 days in Bengaluru and it was 25 days across the state. This is possible because of the mobile passport police app which was piloted first in Bengaluru with five police stations in May 2016. From August it has been extended to all police stations in Bengaluru," he said.

The app allows cops to download the digital copies of applications cleared by passport officers and upload the verification immediately from the field, thus reducing the time and paper use.

Karnataka has been second highest issuer of passports in 2015 after Lucknow—6.18 lakh passports issued in the calendar year. As on last Thursday, the RPO issued five lakh passports and hopes to issue 6.3 lakhs by the end of this year. Of the volume, Karthigeyan claims 45% applications come from Bengaluru alone.

"But we are not seeing a drastic increase in demand for passports as compared to 2013 and 2014. One of the reasons we think, may be, the penetration of passport holders in Karnataka is much higher than few other states like Lucknow," he added.

It has already reduced the wait period for one day for appointment slots, the officer claimed. Last year, it held 27 passport melas to expedite and resolve pending applications. This year, RPO Karnataka has already held seven camps and one more is being organised in Chitradurga on Saturday.

That is not it. Beginning October 13, the state RPO is also authorized to attest or apostille documents required for visa or other purposes by existing passport holders. The documents however, have to be submitted to four outsourced agencies—BLS International Services (Shivajinagar), VFS Global Services(Shivajinagar), IVS Global (Sheshadripuram) and Superb Enterprises (Infantry road).

"We have set up a attestation cell in the Koramangala headquarters of RPO where two senior passport officers will attest documents that must be originated and issued from Karnataka. Even if people living in other states have documents originating or issued from Karnataka, it will be attested. This will take two days," he said.

Ministry of external affairs has prescribed a fee of Rs 18 and Rs 20 for different types of documents and a fixed fee of Rs 150 to be paid to the outsourced agency.

Bengaluru, Jan 9: Some BJP workers created a ruckus on Wednesday at a college here while seeking support for the amended Citizenship Act by raising slogans like 'Go back to Pakistan' outside the campus on Wednesday, as girl students opposed a pro-CAA banner on the wall of their institution.

A video of the incident went viral on social media.

A group of BJP workers, supporters of local party leader M M Govindaraj, had put up a poster "India Supports CAA" on the wall of Jyothi Nivas College near Koramangala.

This was opposed by girl students, who said they would not allow any such poster to be put up on the college property.

The BJP workers then tried to shout down the students.

"You are not concerned about citizenship, you are concerned about yourself. You should be concerned about India first. You are not an Indian then," a BJP worker is heard screaming at the girls in the video.

They also questioned the students if they had valid reasons to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Act and sought to know whether they wanted an argument or a debate.

The BJP workers purportedly told the girls that they were only the students of the college and not the owner.

"What's your problem madam with the CAA? Are you the owner of the college?" they asked.

Amid the heated argument, the BJP workers resorted to sloganeering like 'We want CAA' and "Go back to Pakistan', as seen in another video shot by the students.

BTM Layout Congress MLA Ramalinga Reddy visited the college on Thursday after learning about the incident and spoke to its management.

Later, he told reporters that the campus should not be allowed for any political activities.

"Any signature campaign whether in favor or against it (CAA) should be done outside the campus," Reddy said.

He cautioned the pro-CAA protesters he will not let any violent incidents like the one at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi happen at the city college.

Reddy's daughter Sowmya Reddy, who is the Jayanagar MLA, tweeted, "A few videos & photos of outside #JyotiNivascollege are being circulated on social media."

"MLA Ramalinga Reddy & I have spoken to cops and the Prinicipal about this incident. Spoke to DCP South East Bengaluru and she said that Koramangala cops went there immediately & they are picketing even now," she added.

Bengaluru, Apr 10: Renowned ophthalmologist and Narayana Nethralaya Chairman Dr K Bhujang Shetty today advised those wearing contact lenses to switch to eyeglasses as a preventive measure.

“Though the facial mask is mandatory as a preventive measure against the dreaded Coronavirus, not many know that the virus can also enter the body through eyes. Wearing glasses or spectacles reduces the spread of the virus,” Dr Bhujang Shetty said.

Although it is more likely that people may catch Coronavirus infections through mouth and nose, there are chances of the virus also entering through eyes. “In a day, humans tend to touch their face and eyes almost 20 times an hour knowingly or unknowingly. Users of contact lenses end up touching their eyes and face frequently, increasing the risk of infections. Therefore, it is advisable that they switch to eyeglasses until the situation improves”, according to a release here on Friday.
