The incident took place in Bharsingi village, under Jalalkheda police station in Nagpur Rural district on Wednesday morning and came to light when a video of the attack went viral on social media.

“Salim Ismail Shah, a resident of Katol town, was returning to his town when a group of men stopped him and asked him to get off his two-wheeler and show what he was carrying. When he resisted, the men attacked him,” Nagpur rural superintendent of police Shailesh Balkawade said.

Mr. Shah, 34, suffered injuries on his neck and face. He was admitted to a hospital in Nagpur and discharged on Thursday morning. However, he was again admitted again after he complained of uneasiness.

While Mr. Shah is unable to speak, his mother claimed that he was returning from Jalalkheda after selling cotton when the attack took place.

‘Dedicated party worker’

“He was not carrying beef. My son is a dedicated BJP worker,” Ms. Rihana Shah said. “The victim was carrying some kind of meat. He has named four unknown persons. We could establish the identity of all four from the video clip and arrested them. They are not affiliated to any right-wing organisations. One of the accused is a taluka-level president of Prahar, a socio-political organisation,” Mr. Balkawade said.

The BJP’s Nagpur rural president Rajiv Potdar said Mr. Shah was not carrying beef.

“He was and is our party’s active worker and office bearer. We strongly deny the allegations that he was carrying beef. The attackers have no relation with the BJP. They belong to Prahar run by Independent MLA Bachhu Kadu. Prahar people planned and carried out this attack. It was a stunt to defame the BJP,” Mr. Potdar said.

Bengaluru, Apr 18: Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu drew flak from his own party the BJP as well as the Congress for allegedly letting hundreds of people throng the Rupangudi Road in Ballari to collect food packets from him.

Visuals showed that the people came in hordes and fell on each other to collect the packets Sriramulu was distributing to the poor and needy as relief measure in the wake of lockdown.

The videos showed the minister standing with his team by the roadside and spreading out tables all along to distribute the food kit to the poor people.

Those in the queue had elderly people too.

A majority of people who rushed to grab the food packets did not bother to protect themselves with a mask.

"Whoever has done he has committed a blunder whether it is Sriramulu in Ballari or Anand Singh in Hospet.

All these elected representatives want to show that they are serviing the people in their constitutuency," said Karnataka BJP spokesperson Go Madhusudana.

Flaying the leaders of all political parties for defying norms, Madhusudana sad this has become fashionable for the leaders to perform 'cheap shows'.

He advised Sriramulu that it should have been done with door-to-door delivery of food packets instead of arranging it at the public place.

Congress spokesperson K E Radhakrishna said a case should be registered for defying regulations.

"I am all appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa who were the first to wake up and do something good for the people.

Now I feel sorry for them.

I wonder why they cannot control their own partymen.

People should file FIR against him (Sriramulu)," Congress spokesperson Prof K E Radhakrishna said

Slamming the alleged VVIP culture in the country, Radhakrishna said when the nation is facing a crisis, lavish marriages and grand birthday parties were organised. In the midst of all this health minister organises a food distribution mela, he added.

Attempts to reach the minister went in vain.

However, speaking to reporters at Ballari, Sriramulu admitted that the cases suddenly shot up in the state because of disregard to social distancing.

"People's support to lockdown is essential.

People have to maintain social distancing, without which we cannot control it," the minister said.

Kasaragod, Apr 29: Kasaragod's General Hospital on Tuesday discharged the last of its 89 COVID-19 patients, who were admitted since the outbreak of the disease last month.

The patient discharged on Tuesday is a native of Anankur in Kerala. He was under treatment for 27 days following his return from Dubai. He was given a warm send-off at 12 noon by the doctors and hospital staff.

Of the 175 positive cases in Kasaragod district, only 12 are under treatment in other hospitals in the district now. Of them, seven had come from the Gulf and the remaining five were those in contact with them.

During a press meet, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, while referring the Kasaragod General Hospital's success story, congratulated the doctors, nurses and medical staff for the achievement.

According to Health Department, in spite of treating the highest number of COVID-19 patients in the state with meagre infrastructural facilities and even without the support of a medical college in the district, there have been no deaths.

According to the district administration, Kasaragod has conducted 4,112 tests so far, out of which 3,104 tested negative and the results of 833 are awaited.

The team of doctors, nurses and other staff numbering 250 is led by Dr Rajaram K Kandiyil, Superintendent of the Kasaragod General Hospital.
