Valley erupts in protest over deaths in Army firing

Srinagar, Nov 5: Anger over the killing of two schoolboys in Army firing on Monday evening spilled over to the streets on Tuesday with stone-throwing protesters clashing with the police, forcing the authorities to clamp curfew in several parts of downtown Srinagar.

Senior district administration officials said curfew was imposed in Khanyar, Nowhatta, Mahraj Gunj, Rainawari, Safakadal and Nowgam and there was palpable tension throughout the city.

The two boys who died were identified as Faisal and Mehrajuddin. Faisal was studying in class VII. He had gone out in his father’s car to buy curtains for the hall where the family was planning a party on Sunday. “Faisal met his neighbourhood friends and all of them decided to go to Chattargam for a while to watch Marsiya (mourning on Muharram). Then the Army killed him,” says Faisal’s cousin, Jan Muzaffar.

According to one of the boys, who escaped unhurt, their car brushed against a tipper truck on their way to Chattargam and were afraid that the driver would catch hold of them and beat them up. “They drove fast fearing the tipper truck driver and missed the Army signal to stop and they [the Army] killed them for it,” says Mohammad Sami, a shopkeeper outside Faisal’s home. “I saw him when he left home and then when they brought his body today, I couldn’t recognise him.” Faisal’s brother, Faizan (9) could not understand why the Army did not shoot at the tyres of the car if they wanted to stop the vehicle. “Why did they shoot at the windows,” he wondered.

Defence Minister Arun Jaitely said a fair inquiry would be held and action taken against those found guilty.

Mumbai, Feb 18: A group of citizens on Tuesday demanded a thorough inquiry into the death of special CBI judge Brijgopal Harkishan Loya in 2014.

The group has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, seeking a time-bound probe into the death of Loya.

Loya, who was hearing the high-profile Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case of Gujarat, died of a cardiac arrest in Nagpur on December 1, 2014, when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague's daughter.

Social activist Ashok Pai, addressing a press conference on behalf of the group, also demanded proper compensation for the judge's family, saying he was on an "official" tour.

Pai said on Tuesday he met NCP president Sharad Pawar, whose party is a key constituent of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra, and raised these demands with him.

Pawar assured to look into the demands, he said at the press conference at the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh.

"We have handed over a letter to Maharashtra Assembly speaker Nana Patole and dispatched a copy of the letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray (seeking a probe into Loya's death)," Pai said.

As the matter relates to "mysterious" death of a sitting judge of the CBI, all facts about it must be made public after a detailed and time-bound probe, Pai said.

The Loya death case had reached the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court had held that Loya had died of "natural causes" and had rejected PILs seeking an SIT probe into the death, questioning their motive.

The SC had held that petitions were moved by political rivals to settle scores which was a serious attempt to scandalise the judiciary and obstruct the course of justice through a "frontal attack" on its independence.

Ahead of the grand foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Ram Temple on August 5, Ayodhya priest and 16 police personnel, involved in the mega event on August 5, have tested positive for COVID-19. Priest Pradeep Das is one of the four priests who regularly perform puja at the Ram Temple site in Ayodhya.

Das has been placed under home quarantine and contact tracing is underway, reported.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh police and Sashastra Seema Bal have been put on high alert in the districts bordering Nepal ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Ayodhya on August 5.

On July 29, Uttar Pradesh reported a record single-day spike of 3,570 COVID-19 cases, taking the infection tally to more than 77,000, while 33 fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 1,530.

"There are 29,997 active COVID-19 cases in the state and 45,807 patients have been discharged after treatment," Additional Chief Secretary, Medical and Health, Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters. "The death toll due to the disease has reached 1,530," he said.

New Delhi, Apr 6: With an increase of 490 cases in the last 12 hours, the total number of COVID-19 positive cases in India climbed to 4067, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.

As many as 109 deaths have been reported across the country due to the deadly disease.
There are 3666 active cases in the country while 292 people have been cured/discharged/migrated.

Maharashtra has reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases so far, standing at 690, followed by Tamil Nadu and Delhi with 571 and 503 cases respectively.
