Mangaluru, Jun 2: The presence of mind of an elderly man and the bravery showed by his young neighbour averted a railway accident on the outskirts of Mangaluru yesterday morning.

trainPassengers of Ernakulam-Hazzrat Nizamuddin Duronto Express thanked the duo after the train was stopped at Panjirel between Mangaluru Junction and Thokur (Surathkal) station.

It was Moses, an elderly man, who noticed a broken railway track around 7.45 am while crossing it to reach his property located on the other side of the track.

He immediately came back and informed his neighbour Harshith, who rushed to the spot, ran back home, grabbed a red T-shirt and ran towards Mangaluru Junction on the track.

When he noticed an oncoming train, he waved the T-shirt and the loco pilot stopped the train.

26-year-old Harshith said that he was sleeping when he was woken up and told about the broken track. Sensing trouble, he rushed to the spot and managed to avert an accident.

The officials concerned were informed and the gangmen arrived at the spot and clamped the track. Southern Railway PRO M?K?Gopinath said the train was held up for 30 minutes between 8.05 am and 8.35 am.

Udupi, Feb 8: A rare sixth century granite idol of ‘Lajja Gauri’ has been discovered fixed on the road in Barkur village of Udupi district, according to information furnished by Dr. Shivakant Bajpai, Superintending Archaeologist of ASI Bangalore Circle. Lajja Gauri is depicted in nude form and is said to be a fertility symbol. The idol is rare, though very popular among certain cults.

Dr Shivakant Bajpai, who is on a tour of the coastal districts, said that he first came across the image when it went viral on social media. He subsequently traced it to a public road in Barkur, which is an ancient historical town of coastal Karnataka. It was the ancient capital of the Alupa kingdom and a seat of power for several centuries.

“This is a very important idol and hundreds of vehicles pass over it every day. We are rescuing it and I have issued an order to my local in-charge to keep it in safe custody. I have also sent a mail in this regard to the DC and SP of the district,” he said.

The idol is likely to be of 6th or 7th century, though further study is required to confirm a date, Dr. Bajpai said.

Lajja Gauri is a lotus-headed Hindu deity associated with abundance, fertility and sexuality, sometimes euphemistically described as Lajja ("modesty").

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Former chief minister Siddaramaiah and other leaders are likely to make the final decision on the name of the next Congress president of Karnataka soon, said party leader Dinesh Gundu Rao on Thursday.

"He (Siddaramaiah) has met all the leaders and I think soon they will make a decision. It has already been delayed, it should not have been delayed so much. I am sure high command will take a decision on this," Rao told reporters here.

Both Siddaramaiah and Gundu Rao had resigned from their posts, Leader of Congress Legislature Party and KPCC president, after the party's drubbing in the bye-elections held for 15 Assembly seats last year.
